Tagged, I’m It

Me cooking, Gizmo hanging aroundI’m not really a fan of memes, but when the wonderful Jennifer over at Tree Hugging Family tagged me for this one I couldn’t say no.

The idea is supposed to be to write seven random facts about me that you might not know. This job is made fairly easy since I’m a new kid on the block here in the travel channel, and chances are that most of you don’t know a lot about me at all! So here goes.

1. I met my husband online. This used to be a little embarrassing to admit, but after five years together and one of wedded bliss I’m happy to ‘fess up. The story gets even crazier when you realise that he lived in the United States and I was here in Australia. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and he settled in Australia two years ago. Who said the internet was just for blogging?

2. I have an alien cat. Well, that’s not entirely true, but if you ask most people that’s exactly what they’ll say. I’m the proud owner of a Devon Rex kitten called Gizmo. Sure he looks a little different from the other kitties on the block with his buggy eyes and enormous ears, but I think he’s the cutest thing ever. I also suffer from terrible allergies (bonus fact!), so his non-shedding fur is a godsend.

3. I am stuck in the 80s. Yes, I know it’s 2007, but do I have to come too? Just leave me here with my John Hughes films, power ballads, and Patrick Swayze posters. I have stopped wearing the legwarmers though.

4. I love to cook. I make a point of trying at least one new recipe every week, but most week’s it’s more than that. I have a lot of favourite things to eat, but my favourite thing to cook is risotto. There’s something so calming about stirring, stirring, stirring.

5. I despise exercise. Sadly this isn’t such a good thing when combined with fact four. I’ve started to sit on an exercise ball while I work, but I still can’t rouse myself to actually get up and do anything. I used to hide in the change rooms in high school P.E. classes. Clearly I haven’t gotten any better.

6. I have a weakness for baby animals, yet I’m immune to the charms of human babies. I hope I can develop some kind of baby love before my sister pops out my first niece in January. Until then though, give me puppies, kittens, ducklings, chicks, and bunnies. Lots of bunnies.

7. I am obsessed with the colour purple. Consequently, my apartment has purple towels, purple curtains, purple sheets covered by a purple quilt, purple bowls, purple vases, purple lamps, purple cushions … need I go on? As a child my mum asked me what colour I wanted to paint my room. I told her purple, but she insisted I’d outgrow it. I’m 27 now, and it still hasn’t happened.

Now I’m supposed to tag seven other people, but I’m going to skip out here. Jennifer tagged all the cool kids already!

Chickened out on tagging folks huh. That’s ok; some people really love memes and others people not so much. I think two people I tagged seemed happy about it. I hate pets but that cat of yours is pretty adorable. You know whats funny when I was a kid my favorite color was purple — unlike you though I did outgrow it. But as a kid I was obsessed.

It was interesting to learn some new stuff about you (notables being 1 and 3) so thanks for playing :)

I meant what I said – you really did tag all the cool kids! I don’t know ALL that many people in the b5media world just yet, and most of them made your list. So I figured I’d just leave it there. And glad you learned something – I figured you would! :-)

So far as number 3 goes … you can expect a Lionel Richie concert review on Oz Music Scene in December *lol* I’ll be dancing on the ceiling with the best of them ;-)

    Hi Lauren,

I’m a fellow Aussie living in the US and married to an American too, Alex, he writes for Sirened. We met traveling in Europe. Any way, just thought I’d say hello and while I’m a Victorian it’s nice to see Australia on the blog roll :)

Hi Bellie – those Americans are charming, aren’t they? *lol* Thanks for stopping by! While I’m not covering Melbourne, I hope you’ll visit again to see what’s happening at “home.” :-) Aussie Aussie Aussie!

Yes those Americans can be quite the charmers ;) hehe! Alex and I went to Sydney twice when he was living out there with me. Once for fun and the other time to get my visa for the US. Our interview was at the American Consulate, wow do they have a gorgeous view of the harbour!
And of course “oi oi oi”

Yanks Yanks Yanks! Ooo ooo ooo! I’m starting my own American chant :)

Where in the US is your husband from Lauren? I’ve lived in Florida most of my life but was born in Canada so I went to Aus on a 1 year working holiday visa to live with “Bellie.” We had previously met in Belgium (long story). So yeah my visa was running out and we decided to come back here (We were going to get married in the US but got married in Melbourne because the spousal visa was way quicker, if we did the American fiance visa my Aussie visa was going to expire). Been back in the USA for over 2 years now and ready to leave again!!

Well, cheers and good on ya :)

Hi there Alex :-) My husband’s from Philadelphia … before moving to Australia he’d actually never lived anywhere else! I visited him a couple of times – got to see Philly, New York, Washington D.C., and Baltimore which were all lovely.

So where are you headed next? Are you coming back to Oz?

  8. November 5th, 2007 | 9:14 pm

Hey Lauren, I really loved living in Aus and really missed it for a good year upon returning to the US. I wouldn’t mind moving back one day but Bell and I are actually hoping to move to Europe soonish (better do it now before we get old and crusty). My Dad is Greek and I have Greek citizenship so I can get resident cards in the EU countries.

I haven’t been to Philly since I was a kid. We did a big ballpark tour around the US and saw the Phillies play.

Oh Europe would be wonderful. I’m afraid I haven’t been yet, but places like Italy, Greece, and Ireland are on my “must do” list. I hope you have a great time while you’re living there!
