Sidney Nolan on Show

Ned Kelly 1946, © National Gallery of AustraliaArt buffs should get themselves to the Art Gallery of New South Wales soon to see Sidney Nolan: A New Retrospective.

He’s best remembered for his Ned Kelly series, but did you know Nolan painted more than 30, 000 works during his career? You won’t see nearly that many here, but the gallery has selected 117 of Nolan’s best for this show. That makes this exhibition the biggest showing of Nolan’s work since his death in 1992.

The world have been gathered from public and private collections here in Australia, London the United States and France. Many of the works have rarely been seen in public, adding interest for Nolan’s biggest fans.

The paintings are displayed in chronological order, allowing visitors to see Nolan’s evolution from his early days in Melbourne to his later life in the UK. The works include his St Kilda and Wimmera themes, his first Ned Kelly series, Australian landscapes and explorers, and Chinese and Australian-inspired abstractions.

“Sidney Nolan is the best known, the most familiar, name in the history of modern Australian art,” said Edmund Capon, the director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. “Indeed his name is synonymous with Australia.”

You can view the artworks at your own pace, or participate in one of the guided tours. They run each day at midday and 2 pm, and at 7:15 pm on Wednesdays. If you want to take a tour, but don’t fancy being part of a group, an audio tour is just the thing. They cost $6, or $5 for gallery members and concession holders. The Children’s Trail will help six to twelve-year-olds learn about Nolan’s works while having fun.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the gallery will also host a number of events including the Sidney Nolan Symposium on November 3 and lectures by academics, art critics, and celebrities. Further details about this events are available at the Art Gallery of New South Wales website.

The exhibition is on show until February 3. It will then tour Melbourne and Brisbane. Admission costs $12 for adults, $9 for children, seniors, and students, and $33 for families.
