Sydney Welcomes Its Festival First

With showers pelting down, it’s tempting to spend the day curled up with a blanket and a good book. But if you do you’ll miss the free entertainment happening all over the city. Need another reason to ditch the PJs and go outside? Just check out this killer Festival First Night line-up.

Angel Place – Check out DJs, instrumentalists, and MCs keeping the place jumping from 7 pm

Martin Place and Philip Street – Plenty of cool stuff from 3 pm with break dancing, free running, krumping, belly-dancing, and performances by Maya Jupiter and Morganics. Enjoy the street party from 7 pm with two stages hosting the likes of Spank Rock, Chromeo, Plump DJs, Lost Valentinos, Ajax, Kato, Funktrust, and Ember.

Hyde Park – It’s all about the kids with family friendly entertainment from 3 pm. Jade McRae, the Sydney Youth Orchestra, and Australian Youth Choir will all perform, and kids can check out the origami tent and cool inflatable Frog Dream playground. From 6 pm big kids will love the Taste of Sydney exhibition, where the city’s leading restaurants will showcase some of their finest cuisine.

Macquarie Street – The Spanish Harlem Orchestra will kick things off at 7 pm with their infectious Latin tunes. Then at 8 pm, three couples will get married in front of thousands of well wishers. At 9:15 pm Scottish outfit Shooglenifty will get everyone dancing with their Celtic tunes.

The Domain – The biggest free show this city’s seen in some time starts at 8 pm. Paul Kelly will open up proceedings before handing over to music veteran Brian Wilson.

Hyde Park Stage – It’s all about the 1940s from 7 pm. Swing Patrol will offer dance lessons, and then you can boogie to Shuffle Club, Pink Martini, and DJ Brame (G-Swing).
