World Music at Hemispheres
The Sydney Opera House is celebrating world music, with its first Hemispheres concert series. The program is jampacked with world music stars making their first visit to our shores. These are the shows you can expect to see:
February 24, Ornette Coleman (USA) – One of America’s great jazz pioneers. Tickets from $59
March 1, Yasmin Levy (Israel) – A beautiful woman with a beautiful voice, who delivers powerful love songs and ballads. Tickets from $55
March 3, Cesaria Evora (Cape Verde) – This gutsy Grammy award winner has been compared to Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, and Anjelique Kidjo. Tickets from $75
March 5, The Idan Raichel Project (Israel) – Israel’s biggest musical phenomena combines reggae and hip hop grooves for their own unique sound. Tickets from $49
March 9, Daorum (Australia/Korea) – Performance of Pansori, a storytelling style of musical theatre featuring a vocalist and a drummer. Tickets from $25
March 14-15, Russian Roulette (Russia/Australia) – A Russian house party with performances by ARIA award winners Zulya and the Children of the Underground and Russia’s DJ Sveta. Tickets from $25
March 12, Toumani Diabate (Mali) – Grammy award-winning African classical harpist, who plays jazz, flamenco, and funk with a distinctly tribal flavour. Tickets from $59
March 25, Omar Faruk Tekbilek (Turkey) – Multi-talented, multi-instrumental world music genius. Tickets from $44
April 24, Marcel Khalif (Lebanon) – Powerful songs from the man known as the Bob Dylan of the Middle East. Tickets from $75
June 14, Anoushka Shankar (India) – Ravi Shankar’s daughter combines traditional Indian ragas with electronic rhythms and pop sounds. Tickets from $70
