Sydney’s Stunning Churches
When you think about beautiful churches, you probably think about major European cities rather than Sydney. But New South Wales’ capital manages to hold its own, with the stunning St Mary’s Cathedral and St Andrew’s Anglican Church. These beautiful old buildings are a must-see for tourists and locals alike.
St Mary’s Cathedral is located to the east of Hyde Park. Its first stone was laid in 1868, but it’s still not finished! No one seems to care very much though, because this beautiful Gothic church is the centre of Sydney’s Roman Catholic community. Right now the spires are currently being installed, bringing the church one step closer to completion.
You’ll find St Andrew’s Anglican Church next to Sydney Town Hall in George Street. Governor Lachlan Macquarie laid the foundation stone in 1819, but unfortunately funds were short and it didn’t really get off the ground until 1837. Its original Gothic plans were scrapped, and it was redesigned to resemble St Mary’s Church in Oxford, England. It was eventually completed on St Andrew’s Day, 30 November 1868, making it Australia’s oldest church.

While I don’t consider myself especially religious, I do think that religious buildings offer some of the most beautiful architecture out there.
