A Day at the Zoo

I’ve insisted I needed to go to Taronga Zoo for some time. But something always seemed to come up, and my plans were put on the backburner. So when my husband committed to going with me last Sunday, I wouldn’t allow the rain to dampen our spirits. Umbrellas in hand, we got out there had a whole lot of fun.

Most people wait for clear skies and sunshine to see the zoo. I know I used to. But honestly, if you can manage it a grey day is the way to go. The weather scares the crowds away, so you don’t have to jostle for a great position around the enclosures. The animals seemed pleased to have things a little quieter too, and they put on a real show. I could tell you all about my day, but I think it’s more fun to show you. So here’s a look at some of my favorite zoo residents.

Elephant

I hadn’t been to the zoo since the elephants moved to the new Wild Asia exhibit. This one apparently loves his new digs, and took great joy batting about his favourite toy. Too cute!

Monkey

This De Brazza’s monkey sat patiently and posed for a photo, so I figured I should show it to you all. What a Kodak moment!

Seal

I can’t say enough good things about the new Southern Oceans exhibition. The seals loved showing off in their new space, and we spent ages watching them twist and turn under the water.

Tapir

I’m not sure what it is about the tapir, but I just love them. They’re so ugly that they’re kind of cute, and they can get away with being so lazy!

Otter

It’s so hard to choose a favourite zoo animal, but if I had to pick just one it’d probably be the otter. In fact, we love the otters so much that when we couldn’t spot them the first time we made sure to come back. Thankfully we timed our second visit with their feeding time, so they were super active and adorable!

Condor

This Andean condor was just such a show off, I had to show you. He turned around and around with wings outspread, as if he wanted to show us just how big he is.

Bear

It’s impossible not to look at this big Kodiak Bear and be impressed. She looks like she’d be wonderful to cuddle, but I’m probably safer keeping my distance!

Hippo

I love love love pygmy hippos! Almost as much as otters! This one is an absolute cutie, isn’t she?

Red Panda

Speaking of cute, what about this gorgeous red panda? These creatures have such beautiful faces, and so much energy, I always spend some time at their enclosure.

Meerkats

The cuteness never ends! These little meerkats had the right idea. They’d positioned themselves under this heat lamp to warm up. I’m sure they were more comfortable than us!

Chimpanzees

Baby! Yes this adorable little one is one of the star attractions in the chimpanzee enclosure. There’s two darling babies, and we got a great view of them while their mums were tucking into some lunch. Too cute!

Emu

I wouldn’t be a very good Aussie tour guide if I didn’t include one of the locals. I always get a little nervous about the emu in the Aussie Walkabout exhibit. I’m sure he’s harmless, but would you trust that face?
