Sydney Gets a Wine Bar

Wine

For some time Melbourne has had one (just one!) thing over Sydney: wine bars. While we’ve been happy downing schooners at our local pub, the Melbournians have enjoyed these elegant rooms where wine can be enjoyed without food.

Now Sydney’s jumped on board with its first wine bar, MilleVini. The name, which means “a thousand wines” should be enough to excite any wine buff. In actual fact, the wine list is a bit smaller than that, but only just. The 400 bottled wines available should be enough to impress groups.

But things are a little bleak if you’re hoping for wine by the glass. There are only eight whites, eight reds, and two sparkling varieties offered which is a little slim for any connoisseur.

You can pair your drinks with the tapas plates, which are generous and made for sharing. There’s not much here that we haven’t seen many times before. There’s calamari, zucchini flowers, lamb skewers, sound familiar? However what it lacks in originality it makes up for in taste.

Also make sure you leave plenty of time because the service isn’t up to scratch. However the bar is new, and hopefully things will improve here.

The most exciting thing about the opening of MilleVini is that we are finally seeing wine bars opening in Sydney. Hopefully it won’t be the last.
