Sydney Trains are Just the Ticket

CityRail train

No matter where you need to go in Sydney, there’s probably a train to get you there.

The CityRail network is the easy way to get around the city and Sydney’s suburbs. And if you feel like venturing further, you can easily access the Hunter region, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, and South Coast on one of the trains. How perfect for daytrippers!

Trains start running at around 4 am in the morning, and run up until midnight in most cases. After midnight, NightRide bus services replace the trains, making it easy for you to get home after exploring Sydney’s nightlife.

CityRail ticket prices are affordable for travelers on any budget. There are also a range of ticket options, so you can easily find one to suit you. The leisure tickets are designed with travellers in mind.

There’s the DayTripper, an all-in-one ticket giving you access to CityRail trains, Sydney Buses, and Sydney Ferries. It also comes with discount offers to some of Sydney’s biggest attractions to help you save even more. DayTripper passes cost $16 for adults and $8 for kids.

Then there’s the CityHopper, which offers unlimited all day train travel around the 11 stations in the central business district. These passes cost $7.40 for adults and $3.70 for kids at peak time, and $5.20 for adults and $2.70 for kids off-peak. If you’re travelling from outside the city you can still get a CityHopper – just ask the station staff and they’ll add $2.20 to your adult fare (and $1.10 to a child’s fare) to cover the cost.

If you’ll be in Sydney for a while, you may like to consider a SydneyPass. They’ll give you travel for any three, five, or seven days within an eight day period on  Sydney’s trains, buses, and ferries. SydneyPasses start at $110 for adults, $55 for kids, and $275 for families.

If you can, you’ll probably want to avoid travelling during peak times. When kids are heading to school and folks are heading to work, the trains can get very crowded. If you can plan your travel for the quiet periods, you’ll find CityRail trains a comfortable and reliable way to get around the city.
