A Baby Pygmy Hippo Born at Taronga Zoo!

Monifa the pygmy hippo

Have you seen the newest arrival at Taronga Zoo? This adorable little animal is Monifa, a baby pygmy hippopotamus!

The three-week-old hippo is only as big as a piglet, which is why she can be washed in this tub! In fact, baths are one of her favourite things!

“She’s such an inquisitive little thing and loves bath time, she even turns somersaults in the water,” said the zoo’s hippo keeper Renae Zammit.

Monifa means “I am lucky” in Nigerian, and it’s a pretty apt name! Wild pygmy hippos are under threat due to dwindling habitats and opportunistic hunters. Isn’t it wonderful that we have a zoo that can protect gorgeous creatures like this little one?

But she won’t be this cute forever, so make sure you visit her at Taronga Zoo before she’s all grown up!

Trading hours: The zoo is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm
Location: Taronga Zoo
Address: Bradleys Head Road, Mosman
Public transport: Catch a ferry from Circular Quay or bus from Wynyard Station
Parking: On site parking costs $10
Cost: Adult passes are $39, children are $19, and kids under four are free

She is SO cute. That’s one of the cutest baby pictures I’ve ever seen.

I think so too Dina! And we’re apparently getting a baby elephant in the New Year too! I think it’s about time I planned another zoo visit :-)
