Sydney Expands Cycleways

Sydney City Council will create a 200 km cycling network, and we could see the new routes as early as next year. Bicycle

“We have now moved from the planning phase into the reality of delivering safe, convenient and accessible cycling infrastructure to get more Sydneysiders on their bikes,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said today.

“Priority must be given to investing in green infrastructure – projects which will make our urban areas more sustainable and better equipped for the future – while providing health improvements, jobs for our community and benefits for the economy.”

It’s hoped that the new cycleways will relieve congestion on the roads and improve the health of Sydney and its residents. Families haven’t been forgotten either, with Ms Moore adding that the cycleway should be safe enough for a child to use.

The plans include:

  • creating cycleways on local streets
  • designing a shared pedestrian and bicycle path on College Street
  • securing government funding for a 245 km inner-Sydney regional cycle network connecting the city to Willoughby, Rockdale, and Canada Bay
  • building Sydney’s first separated cycleway on King Street
  • designing a separated cycleway on Bourke Street
  • designing a new cycleway on Union Street, Pyrmont
  • consulting the community on a new separated cycleway for Missenden Road, Camperdown
  • introducing a bicycle hire service for the CDB and the rest of metropolitan Sydney

I’m so glad to see this.

I’m going to send the link to my husband. He’s into cycling.

Fantastic news and well overdue. I’ve recently started cycling into work and the cycleway across the bridge is fantastic but dealing with Sydney rush hour around CBD and Central is not much fun.

    Good on ya Clover Moore!

It looks like this is going to be very popular! Sounds to me like Sydney could be well on its way to becoming a much greener city!
