Another ANZAC for the Bridge

by Lauren on April 27th, 2008

Anzac BridgeFolks will find it a little difficult to get around Sydney today due to the closure of the Anzac Bridge.

All lanes, including the pedestrian and cycle paths, will be closed from 5:30 am to midday. Clearways will also be enforced from Broadway to the Pyrmont Bridge.

All the hassles will be worth it though when the bridge’s New Zealand soldier statue is unveiled. The 4.2m figure joins the Australian soldier which has stood at the other end of the bridge for the last eight years.

The New Zealand soldier faces east, while the Aussie digger faces west. The sculptor Alan Somerville told The Sunday Telegraph this was so one soldier will watch the sun rise, while the other watches it set.

“It’s in accordance with the ode, which says at the going down of the sun and in the morning we shall remember them,” he explained.

Like the Australian soldier, sand from the beaches of Gallipoli will be sealed underneath the feet of the New Zealand officer.
