Best Budget Meals at Ryde City Bowling Club

by Lauren on February 29th, 2008

Lawn bowls, Source: Dave Apple @ FlickrLast night my parents and I headed out west to catch Santana at ACER Arena. We weren’t really sure where we should head for dinner, so we decided to turn off at Ryde and see what took our fancy. My parents are big fans of clubs, so when we spied Ryde City Bowling Club I knew that would be our destination.

The basic pale blue exterior doesn’t promise much, but what’s inside is perhaps one of the best value meals in town. The menu is fairly basic, offering standard pub fare like battered fish, lamb cutlets, and an old fashioned mixed grill. We were lucky enough to arrive on $10 steak night, so we all opted for T-bones. The standard price of $15 wouldn’t have broken the bank, but my family never could resist a bargain.

Once our meals were ordered we headed to a bar. I felt a sense of trepidation spying only two reds by the glass, but reasoned that if my shiraz cabernet it was at least cheap. I don’t think I’ve ever spent as little as $2.70 on a glass of wine, and I was surprised to find it quite drinkable. Certainly not the best wine I’ve had, but I’ve paid three times that price for glasses that were a lot worse.

When our steaks arrived I was thrilled to find mine perfectly medium rare and slathered with a delicious mushroom sauce. My mother was less fussed with her very pink medium steak, but found the staff accommodating and happy to cook it for a little longer. The plate even returned with fresh vegetables and chips.

We lingered over coffee feeling incredibly satisfied, and with fuller wallets than we’d expected. It wasn’t flash, but I think the Ryde City Bowling Club Bistro is a real find.
