Brett Whiteley’s Surry Hills Studio

Brett Whiteley Studio

Few Sydney artists made the impression on the art world that Brett Whiteley did. More than 15 years after his death his works still resonate with life. This is certainly the case for those housed in The Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills.

The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985, and converted it into an impressive studio and exhibition space. In 1988 he moved in, and he lived there until he died in 1992.

Today it remains just as Brett left it, with unfinished paintings, art equipment, and graffiti covered walls boasting rich imagery and quotes. The living area is home to candid photographs, postcards, furniture, sketchbooks, and other personal memorabilia. The gallery houses paintings, drawings, sculptures, and graphics. The works are regularly rotated, making the studio ideal for repeat visits.

The Brett Whiteley Studio lacks the polish of a traditional art gallery, and therein lies its charm.

Wow - love this type of thing. Will have to add it to my list of things to do next time I’m up in Sydney. Great find Lauren (nice image too).

Thanks. I wish I could take credit for the picture - I love the way the photographer has cut it :-) Brett Whiteley’s work is fabulous though.
