Burlesque at the Opera House

The Sydney Opera House seems like an unlikely setting for the sexy and sensual art of burlesque. But that’s just what we’re getting when The Burlesque Hour hits town.
The show has been described by one UK critic as “gender-bending, bodice-ripping, stereotype-trashing, neo-circus cabaret madness.” Yes, this isn’t one to take the kiddies to. But it sounds like consenting adults are in for one hell of a time.
The show stars a colorful cast of characters including the self-styled Queen of Cabaret Bizarre Moira Finucane, strongwoman Azaria Universe, and Japanese butoh dancer Yumi Umiumare.
“Woven into the fabric of The Burlesque Hour are about 20 different art forms: butoh, circus, freak show, the gothic, Victorian melodrama, showgirl, music hall,” enthused Ms Finucane in a recent interview with The Sunday Telegraph.
“It’s an incredible ride through these old-style artforms, with a completely contemporary twist. Everything you see goes somewhere you would never expect it to.”
