One of my favourite local art exhibitions is the Chalk Urban Art Festival. There’s just something so beautiful about seeing such amazing works that you know will never last once the elements attack.

This Thursday 35 artists armed with only coloured chalk will transform a two by three metre space of cement into an incredible artwork. Over the next four days they’ll work on their pieces and chat to the passersby.

That interactive element makes the Chalk Urban Art Festival so much more accessible than some of those snooty gallery shows. Where else can you see art come alive in front of your eyes, and ask the artist about their inspirations?

This year the festival is even better than ever with the addition of an urban music program, street theatre, fashion stalls, a Wearable Art Showcase, and an urban fashion parade.

Dates: 4 to 7 September

Locations: Tumbalong Park and Chinese Gardens Forecourt, Darling Harbour
Public transport: Take the train to Town Hall station and walk down Druitt Street, take a ferry to Aquarium Wharf, take the monorail to Darling Park or Convention station, or take the light rail to Convention station
Parking: Parking is available at Harbourside Car Park and Kings parking stations at 182 and 383 Sussex Street
