Chalk Art On Show

by Lauren on September 20th, 2007

Chalk the Walk, Source: Chalk the Walk websiteOne of Sydney’s coolest art festivals, Chalk the Walk, kicks off today at Pyrmont Bridge. More than 40 artists will compete for top honours, armed only with a patch of concrete and a tub of chalk.

They’ll have just four days to complete their masterpieces. Pedestrians are encouraged to check out the works in progress and enjoy the range of urban entertainment on offer. Funk outfits, R&B singers, DJs and performance artists will appear on the Street Chalk Stage this weekend.

But the bridge won’t be the only canvas used during the festival. Famed pavement artist Jenny McCracken will create her artwork on a car supplied by the festival’s chief sponsor, Mazda.

Another Chalk the Walk favourite is last year’s winner, Gary Jagamarra. This year’s artists don’t need to worry about him taking this year’s crown, but he will appear as a special guest artist.

Entry is free, but you’ll need to make a donation if you want to vote for the People’s Choice Awards. Simply place a gold coin in the charity bin in front of your favourite artist to vote. All proceeds will benefit Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off the Streets.

The artworks will be scrubbed away at the end of the festival, so see them while you can!

    Hi Lauren,
I’ve been reading your blog for a week now. I am from Brazil but I live in Sydney since 2004.
I am finding very useful your articles about things to do in Sydney and upcoming events, even tough I am a resident in Sydney not a traveler.
Thank you very much and keep up with the good work.
    Cheers,
    Antonio

This wouldn’t be miss Lauren of Oz Music Scene would it? Lord I hope so or this is the worst b5 welcome ever.

Ok; if this is my Lauren than cool on you to have this blog going on on top of the other.

Ok; if this is a new Lauren that I don’t know. Welcome to b5 and this blog looks swell. I love all the amazing pictures so far and I LOVE a good chalk street deal.

I do find it odd that b5 would happen to find two Laurens both from AUS and make them write the only two Oz blog at b5 — but I suppose that would be my luck.

Congrats on the launch no matter what!

*lol* You found me ;-) Yes, Jennifer, I’m over here too … turning into a bit of a b5 addict, aren’t I? When I heard b5media hoped to launch a Sydney blog I just couldn’t help myself. Hopefully I can show you what more Australia (or at least Sydney) has to offer through my new net home! :-)

Well thank goodness. After I posted I was terrified that I scared some poor new Lauren away from b5 with my crazy. I know you understand the crazy stuff so it’s all good. I’ll visit this blog a lot probably. I need to update my blogroll at my personal blog. When I do I’ll add this.
