Decoding Sydney Kids

by Lauren on November 8th, 2007

GirlsIt often seems like Sydney teens are speaking a foreign language. Whether you’re an uncool adult or a visitor to the area, their slang terms are confusing to say the least. But if you follow my advice, you’ll be chatting easily with the local kids in no time.

If Sydney kids don’t like something, you may hear them say it’s “lame,” “hectic” or “chat.” If they like something, they’ll typically say it’s “mad,” “sick,” or the more enthusiastic “fully sick.”

Of course, if you’re going to travel outside of New South Wales, prepare to go into culture shock all over again! “Mad” things in Sydney are “dardy” in Western Australia, “gun” in South Australia, and “the bomb” in the Northern Territory. And those “lame” things? Well they’re “munted” in WA, and “gross” in Tassie.

Then again, if you start using these terms the kids will probably think you’re chat. Maybe we’d better just stick to English!
