Great Southern Oceans Opens at Taronga Zoo

by Lauren on April 3rd, 2008

SealTaronga Zoo’s newest exhibit, Great Southern Oceans, opened its doors today.

The multimillion dollar enclosure is home to 56 aquatic Australian animals including three types of seals, sea lions, two breeds of penguins, and pelicans. Care has been taken to recreate the creatures’ natural habitat.

But they’re not the only ones who’ll be comfortable. Guests can enjoy observing the animals from seats in the enclosure’s 950-seat theatre. The glass-fronted enclosure allows visitors to watch these animals’ movements above and below the water.

“We try to give a better perspective to people of the wild Australian animals of our coastline,” zoo spokesman Mark Williams told National Nine News.

We can also expect to see more gorgeous babies, as the Great Southern Oceans exhibit will offer improved facilities for the zoo’s breeding program.

Address: Bradleys Head Road, Mosman
Public transport: Catch a ferry from Circular Quay or bus from Wynyard Station
