Hare Krishna Culture at Govindas
If you’re in the mood for a relaxing night out that’s a little out of the ordinary, Govindas in Darlinghurst is the ideal destination. It’s a restaurant, movie theatre, and holistic center in one!
First stop is the restaurant, which offers a fantastic Hare Krishna style buffet. All options are vegetarian, and the friendly staff are happy to point out vegan dishes if you desire. Personally I’m a proud carnivore, but the food at Govindas is so tasty I never feel like I’m missing out. The menu is always changing, but features Asian and European standards like dahl, rice, salads, pastas, and vegetable bakes. But make sure you don’t overindulge before dessert. With choices like chocolate mousse, apple crumble, and cheesecake it’s worth saving some room.
Once your belly is full, head upstairs to the luxurious cinema. The theatre is equipped 
with plush cushions, allowing you to lie back and relax. If you’d prefer to sit there are couches and tub chairs, but the cushions are definitely the coolest option. The cinema shows a variety of world movies, indie pieces, and mainstream fare. All the movies and session times are available at the Govindas website.
If you’re planning on seeing a film, make sure you arrive at least half an hour beforehand to eat. However, I always find taking an hour to eat is a lot nicer. Govindas is very popular, especially on weekends, so bookings are recommended.
Govindas is perfect for couples, but not the best option for families with young kids. Children under five are not permitted in the cinema, so it’s probably best to leave them at home for the night.
A night out at Govindas is great value, making it a popular choice with uni students and twenty-somethings. Dinner at the vegetarian buffet costs $16.90. Diners can then see a film for $7.90. Tickets to the movie only are available for $10.90. Govindas is open every day from 6 pm.
