Lizzie Buckmaster Dove Takes us “Into the Woods”
Lizzie Buckmaster Dove Exhibition takes us a little closer to nature with her stunning art exhibition, Into the Woods. She
uses images of native flora and fauna from botanic books to create her amazing works.
Her techniques are extraordinary, and like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Some works are made from rows of curved paper. Others are made of little cubes stacked together. Others have shapes cut out, forcing you to appreciate the empty space as much as the colorful backdrop.
Lizzie knows Australian rarely venture into the woods. Let’s face it: most of us would turn back the moment we saw a snake. Instead we try to tame our environment by pruning the trees, watching the birds through binoculars, and indulging in carefully controlled outdoor activities. Lizzie’s exhibition reminds us that we view nature through our own filters, and encourages us to look beyond our suburban bubbles.

It’s difficult for me to get a true sense of the depth of the art’s beauty from looking at it on the gallery’s website, but what I can see is gorgeous and very unique.
Have you seen the work in person? Does the artist use layers of material in the cut-out pieces, or is everything one-dimensional? The cut outs remind me a bit of pop-up books lying flat.

Hi Chandra - unfortunately I haven’t made it to the exhibition myself so I’m not completely sure, but it seems to me the cut outs are one dimensional. I can definitely see the resemblance to pop-up books!
