Suburb Spotlight: Coogee and Randwick

by Lauren on August 23rd, 2008

Coogee

The twin suburbs of Coogee and Randwick offer much to tourists who want to keep busy while escaping the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The area is a haven for families, couples, and serious surfers.

Where: Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs
How to get there: Take a 45-minute bus ride on the #373 or #374 from Circular Quay
Stay: Backpackers love the affordable accommodation at Surfside Coogee Beach and Wizard of Oz Backpackers. For something a little more glamorous try the Medina Executive Coogee or the Coogee Bay Boutique Hotel
Eat: Check out the bustling cafes or old-fashioned fish and chip shops near Maroubra Beach
See: The famous Royal Randwick Racecourse, the popular surfing spot Maroubra Beach, the historic Bare Island Fort, and the graves of poet Henry Lawson and aviator Lawrence Hargrave at Waverly Cemetery
Tour: Sign up with Cooee Coogee Walking Tours to learn more the area and its history
Shop: Check out the boutique stores near Coogee Beach
Events: The Coogee Jazz Festival every January and the Royal Randwick Racing Carnivals from March to May and September to November
After dark: The Beach Palace Hotel in Coogee is the hottest place around with seven bars and two restaurants over three levels
