Sculpture By the Sea in Sydney

Sculpture By the Sea in Sydney

Have you seen Sculpture by the Sea yet? Australia’s largest free sculpture exhibit opened last Thursday, and it’s already attracting massive crowds.
And it’s not hard to see why. The exhibition stretches along the Bondi to Tamarama costal walk, so you get a workout while you’re enjoying some original art! The views from the coastal cliffs are stunning, providing a beautiful backdrop to these works. The year’s Sculpture by the Sea features more than 100 sculptures from seven different countries around the world.
Before you go, I recommend visiting the Sculpture by the Sea website. On the main page you’ll find a …read more

Young Designers Show Their Wares at Newtown Markets

Young Designers Show Their Wares at Newtown Markets

They’ve already got the Hope Street Markets and the Young Blood Designers Market, so is there room in Newtown for another market? The folks behind the Newtown Designers Market say yes. And I tend to agree with them!
These new markets invite independent designers to showcase their wares, so they’re the perfect place to find a unique outfit, an original piece of jewellery, or a hot one-of accessory. It’s not just about fashion either, with stationery, homewares, and even original artworks for sale.
Hot new labels Karina Pires, Crypt Traste, Fine Cloth, Leeloo, Miss Abigail, and IMOK are among the stalls you’ll …read more

Chalk Art at Darling Harbour

Chalk Art at Darling Harbour

One of my favourite local art exhibitions is the Chalk Urban Art Festival. There’s just something so beautiful about seeing such amazing works that you know will never last once the elements attack.
This Thursday 35 artists armed with only coloured chalk will transform a two by three metre space of cement into an incredible artwork. Over the next four days they’ll work on their pieces and chat to the passersby.
That interactive element makes the Chalk Urban Art Festival so much more accessible than some of those snooty gallery shows. Where else can you see art come alive in front of …read more

Art and Food at the Gallery Café

Art and Food at the Gallery Café

Culture vultures and foodies can happily come together at the Gallery Café. This rustic eatery in Annandale delivers both in abundance, making it a favourite amongst locals.
Almost every square inch of wall space over the two levels is adorned with works from some of Sydney hottest young artists. And the best part is, if you see something you like you can take it home. Everything displayed here is for sale.
It’s quickly earning a reputation for serving up some of the best breakfasts in the inner west thanks to the interesting menu which goes beyond your average bacon and eggs. Those …read more

AC/DC Exposed at Blender Gallery

AC/DC Exposed at Blender Gallery

Aussie rock music fans have their last chance to see one of the coolest photographic collections around this weekend. AC/DC Exposed showcases the works of Phillip Morris, a rock journalist who captured the band at the height of their fame.
The exhibition features some 60 photos, including the publicity shots for High Voltage and Jailbreak, previously unseen shots from the studio sessions of Dirty Deeds, stills from the filming of High Voltage, and images from their historic 1979 gig at the Cremorne Hotel – their last with Bon Scott.
These vintage images show former lead singer Bon Scott and his band mates …read more

Brett Whiteley’s Surry Hills Studio

Brett Whiteley’s Surry Hills Studio

Few Sydney artists made the impression on the art world that Brett Whiteley did. More than 15 years after his death his works still resonate with life. This is certainly the case for those housed in The Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills.
The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985, and converted it into an impressive studio and exhibition space. In 1988 he moved in, and he lived there until he died in 1992.
Today it remains just as Brett left it, with unfinished paintings, art equipment, and graffiti covered walls boasting rich imagery and quotes. The living area is home …read more
