There must be something in the water at Taronga Zoo’s chimpanzee enclosure. Five weeks after the birth of little Sembre, another baby chimp was born. This little bundle known as Sule made his first public appearance today, four weeks after his birth.

Baby Sule will not leave his mother Sacha’s side for the next six months, but he seemed to enjoy the Sydney sunshine.

“Basically, they’re with Mum the whole time. They never leave her,” senior keeper Tracey Arcus explained to The Daily Telegraph.

“Normally they will be in the under-carriage position for six months and Mum won’t put them down at all. “It took us almost a week just to see what sex he was, she kept him so close.”

Sule is the 10th baby chimp born at Taronga Zoo in the last ten years. So it’s surprising that the zoo currently has two new mums and bubs. But it’s a good thing for the proud mothers Sacha and Shiba who’ve forged a close friendship.

“(Sacha) has a particularly close bond with Shiba and Sembe,” Ms Arcus said.

“They’ve been spending a lot of time together grooming and smelling each other’s babies, so they are bonding really well.”

With Mother’s Day approaching the mums were treated to a special breakfast treat of their favourite muesli today.

Sule won’t stay this young and cute forever so make sure you get to Taronga Zoo to see him when you can!
