Virgin Blue Charges Baggage Tax
That bargain interstate flight to Sydney might not be as cheap as you thought, with Virgin Blue introducing new baggage fares for flights booked from today.
Passengers flying on “Blue Saver” or “Promo” fares will be slugged with an $8 fee when they pay online for up to 23 kilos of check-in baggage. But that’s a lot cheaper than the $20 you’ll be charged if you don’t prepay.
A Virgin Blue spokesperson said increased fuel prices and security measures were to blame for the additional fees.
“Today, due to increased security screening it costs us more to process a bag than its owner,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald.
Make sure you’re travelling light because baggage over the 23 kilo allowance will cop an additional $8 charge for every excess kilo. Ouch!
The “pay-for-weight” plan applies for fares booked from today for travel from September 1.
