Walk to Barrenjoey

Like many of you, I made the New Years resolution to get fit this year. The sad thing is, it’s February now and I still haven’t done a thing about it. What I struggle with most is finding exercise I enjoy. I don’t see the point of walking on a treadmill and getting nowhere. So I’ve decided I should get out and about in our beautiful city and see the sights.

The first walk on my agenda is the Barrenjoey headland and lighthouse in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. The walk stretches for about a kilometre from the car park off Beach Road.

The first 400 m to the headland is a fairly effortless walk. I like this because it eases me into the exercise mentality. The next 600 m is a lot tougher as you climb up to the lighthouse.

If you’re a real glutton for punishment then you can take the lighthouse tour. The tours, which operate every Sunday, will clue you in on this historic site. I’ll warn you: there are a lot of stairs inside.

The thing I love most about a good walk is the view at the end. I love taking in my surroundings and feeling like I’ve achieved something. The stunning views of the Central Coast’s waterways make the journey seem worth the effort.

While the walk starts easy, the harder parts mean that good walking shoes are essential. As the weather can be warm this time of year it’s also worth bringing some water for the journey. And don’t forget your hat and sunscreen!

Trading hours: Lighthouse tours run every Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm
Location: Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
Address: Start from Beach Road, Palm Beach
Public transport: Catch a train to Wynyard station and then a #190 bus from Carrington Street to the Beach Road bus stop
Parking: Park in the Beach Road car park
Cost: The walk is free, but the lighthouse tour costs $3 for adults and $2 for kids
